Statement of the Purple Saturdays Movement Regarding the Open Letter Concerning “Linguistic Apartheid Against the Persian Language” by the Taliban in Afghanistan.

The Purple Saturdays Movement(PSM), on this Saturday, September 21, 2024, has issued an open letter to international organizations, including the United Nations, UNESCO, the UN Human Rights Committee, Amnesty International, and Human Rights Watch, demanding recognition of the linguistic apartheid against the Persian (Dari) language in Afghanistan. We urge these organizations to take immediate action to support the linguistic and cultural rights of Persian speakers in Afghanistan.

In this letter, we express our strong objection to the linguistic apartheid imposed by the Taliban against the Persian/Dari language, emphasizing that over the past three years, the Taliban has systematically acted with the goal of complete or partial eradication of the Persian/Dari language in Afghanistan. We have requested the International Criminal Court (ICC) to prosecute and punish the leaders of the Taliban as perpetrators of this crime against humanity.

We have criticized countries such as Iran, Tajikistan, and others that consider themselves the heirs of the Persian/Dari language and culture. We call on these countries and the global community to end their silence regarding this blatant violation of the cultural rights of Persian speakers in Afghanistan. We demand effective and meaningful actions to halt the linguistic apartheid against the Persian/Dari language in Afghanistan, including cultural sanctions against the Taliban and the exclusion of this group from cultural and literary gatherings.

We believe that the protection of the Persian/Dari language and culture is essential for preserving our national identity. The continuation of linguistic apartheid against Dari/Persian in Afghanistan could lead to significant cultural and social crises, not only for the country but for the
