The U.S. Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR) has stated in its latest report that U.S. assistance for rebuilding Afghanistan from 2002 to mid-2021 amounted to $144.7 billion—a figure significantly higher than what the United States spent on rebuilding Europe after World War II.<<Report by: Fahim Sajjadi>>
According to the report, the primary goals of this funding were to establish stability and promote democracy in Afghanistan; however, none of these objectives were ultimately achieved.
SIGAR notes that by the end of 2014, the United States had spent more on Afghanistan’s reconstruction than the total amount allocated under the Marshall Plan for rebuilding 17 European countries after World War II.
The report adds that by 2014, the U.S. had allocated $104 billion for Afghanistan’s reconstruction. In the years that followed—up to 2025, when Washington decided to halt its assistance—Congress approved an additional $44 billion for Afghanistan.
