Simultaneously with the increase of polio cases in Afghanistan, the fourth positive case of this disease has been registered in Behsud district of Nangarhar.
Officials of the polio campaign say that a four-year-old child has fallen victim to this disease in the village of “Tamarkhil” in Behsud district.
Confirming this news, the Taliban Public Health Department in Nangarhar said that the polio vaccination program for children under 5 years of age has been started throughout the province.
This is the fourth child to be infected with polio this year in Afghanistan. All these four new cases have been identified in Nangarhar.
Two months ago, the United Nations Children’s Fund announced the start of a new round of polio vaccination in 34 provinces of Afghanistan.
Polio is a viral disease that has no cure and vaccination is the only way to prevent it.
A child who is not vaccinated against polio may become permanently paralyzed or die after contracting the disease.
Among the countries of the world, Afghanistan and Pakistan are still the only two countries where polio has not been eradicated.
