The extraction of oil from the Amu Darya oil field in northern Afghanistan has boosted domestic oil refining activities by private companies that have been waiting for years to extract oil from this field.
An extraction contract was signed between the Taliban government and the Chinese company “Central Asia Oil and Gas Company”.
Oil extraction in the Amu Darya region, which is currently carried out mainly in the Qeshgari region of Sarpol province, has turned the wheels of domestic oil refining companies.
Investment in the oil refining sector in Afghanistan started about a decade ago. In 2012, the country’s previous government signed a 25-year contract to extract oil from the Amu Darya field with China National Petroleum Corporation, but the extraction work did not take place due to “insecurity”.
Since coming to power in 2021, the Taliban government has been trying to attract investment, particularly from China, in Afghanistan’s oil and gas extraction and extraction.
