Members of former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan’s party say their leader’s life is “in danger” in prison and they are worried about his safety in prison.
Khan is 70 years old. He was arrested on Saturday after being convicted in a corruption case by a court in Islamabad and sentenced to three years in prison.
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Deputy Chairman Shah Mehmood Qureshi told Al Jazeera that the former prime minister has not been allowed to meet his lawyers for two days.
He said the party leadership was “extremely concerned” about Khan’s health.
“Our priority is Khan’s security,” Qureshi, Pakistan’s former foreign minister, told Al Jazeera. We hope justice will be done.
Qureshi said that the prison where Khan is kept does not have enough facilities that should be provided to him as a former prime minister.
“Khan was not given the rights that a prisoner should have,” he said. We face obstacles to achieve this goal. We don’t know what kind of food he gets, we don’t know how he is treated there.
Referring to two prisons in Punjab state, he said: According to the verdict, he should have been transferred to Adiala prison, instead he was transferred to Otok prison, and no one has explained the reason to us.
Attock is located 100 km north of Rawalpindi city in Punjab. Pakistani authorities have not yet commented on the reasons for the change in Khan’s prison.
