Has Germany Turned a Blind Eye? The Cry of Afghan Women in the Berlin Parliament: Report by Shahbano Noor
Dr. Petoni, President of the European Integration Institute and a prominent advocate for women’s rights, addressed the German Parliament in a recent session regarding the dire situation of Afghan women. She called on the German government to uphold its historical responsibility in supporting Afghan women during this critical time.
Highlighting Germany’s long-standing commitment to promoting freedom and education for women in Afghanistan, Dr. Petoni stressed that the country had once invested significantly in these efforts. She urged Germany to stand once again with Afghan women and act to change their devastating circumstances.
During her speech, Dr. Petoni emphasized three key points:
- Reform of the German Admission Process
Dr. Petoni noted that many individuals who have already been accepted by Germany are currently stranded for months — or even years — in neighboring countries such as Pakistan, without valid documents and without necessary support. Many face detention and deportation threats. She called on the German government to reform the admission process and accelerate the transfer of at-risk individuals. - Unrestricted Activities of Taliban-Affiliated Individuals in Germany
She warned that the presence of individuals with ties to the Taliban in Germany has revived fear and trauma among Afghan women and survivors of violence, posing serious security concerns. Dr. Petoni insisted that sensitive documents located in the Consulate in Bonn must not fall under Taliban influence. - Germany’s Leadership in Recognizing and Combating Gender Apartheid
Dr. Petoni appealed to Germany to take international responsibility in acknowledging gender apartheid in Afghanistan and to actively support Afghan women. She urged the government to expedite the admission process, protect the Afghan community already residing in Germany, and establish emergency pathways for women trapped in Pakistan, Iran, Turkey, and Malaysia.
In conclusion, Dr. Petoni stated:
“Afghan women expect Germany not to close its eyes — to prevent an entire generation of women from disappearing in silence.”
She stressed that urgent action is necessary to change the current situation.
