Official Statement on the Russian Government’s Recognition of the Taliban Regime
The recent decision by the Russian government to officially recognize the self-proclaimed Taliban regime is not only a blatant act of support and complicity in gender apartheid against the women of Afghanistan and a flagrant violation of the principles of justice, but also a calculated and systematic threat to global peace and security in exchange for political gains. We condemn this action in the strongest possible terms.
This decision, which effectively turns Taliban-controlled Afghanistan into a regional and global ticking time bomb, is part of a broader project to expand terrorism and extremism from Afghanistan soil. The Russian government’s claim that the Taliban are “combating terrorism” is a baseless attempt to justify its support one that lacks credibility and moral standing. In this regard, the authoritarian Russian government, led by President Putin, must be held to serious international scrutiny and accountability.
This move represents a clear hostility toward the people and national interests of Afghanistan. It provides no guarantees for the protection of fundamental human rights, especially those of women, vulnerable ethnic groups, and religious minorities. Rather, it will only serve to deepen the ongoing human rights crisis in the country.
Russia, as a member of the United Nations, cannot be allowed to violate the core principles of the UN Charter with impunity. We call for formal accountability, comprehensive investigation, and action under the framework of the Uniting for Peace resolution by the United Nations General Assembly, including the consideration of suspending Russia’s membership in relevant UN bodies.
Therefore, under the banner of “Global Solidarity Against Gender Apartheid in Afghanistan and in Defense of Universal Human Rights”, we reaffirm that the voices of Afghanistan women are not appeals for pity, but declarations of protest and warning. We call upon feminist movements and human rights defenders around the world, especially in Russia not to remain silent, and not to allow the women of Afghanistan to be sacrificed at the altar of geopolitical convenience, silence, and compromise.
