‎To strengthen pressure on the Taliban, who have grown bolder under the guise of engaging with the world, the international community must adopt a firm and meaningful approach.

‎Engagement with the Taliban has not only allowed this group to intensify their repression of the Afghan people, especially women, but has also jeopardized fundamental human rights and women’s rights on an international scale.

‎The “Purple Saturdays” movement, concerned about the global community’s disregard for the Taliban’s crimes under the label of engagement, calls for the immediate and effective application of diplomatic pressure. This movement believes that the fruitless process of engagement with the Taliban must be reassessed, and practical and decisive actions must be prioritized. To achieve this goal, the following steps are proposed as effective measures:

‎Targeted financial and economic sanctions: It is essential to fully and comprehensively block all financial resources of the Taliban, particularly illegal trade networks and their foreign supporters. These sanctions should include all entities and individuals providing any form of financial support to the group.

‎Diplomatic sanctions and travel bans: A comprehensive list of senior Taliban officials should be created, and their travel to other countries, even for diplomatic purposes, must be completely prohibited. This measure would isolate the Taliban internationally and cut off their connections with the outside world.

‎Establishment of an international tribunal to investigate war crimes: The international community should establish an independent and impartial fact-finding commission to investigate human rights violations and war crimes committed by the Taliban. The results of these investigations should be referred to international courts for the prosecution of Taliban officials.

‎Support for opposition and internal resistance: The global community should openly and actively support democratic opposition and resistance forces within Afghanistan, providing them with the necessary resources and backing to amplify the voice of the Afghan people.

‎Suspension of all non-humanitarian financial aid: All financial and developmental aid reaching the Taliban must be immediately suspended to prevent the group from using these resources to consolidate power and continue their repression. Humanitarian aid should be distributed directly by the United Nations and reputable NGOs to ensure it does not fall into Taliban hands.

‎Launch a global awareness campaign: A widespread campaign is needed to draw public attention to human rights violations in Afghanistan, particularly those against women and children. These campaigns should be amplified through international media and social networks to increase pressure on the Taliban in global forums.

‎At this critical juncture, the international community must demonstrate greater responsibility and, by implementing these serious measures, hold the Taliban accountable for their crimes. Ending the widespread violations of the rights of the Afghan people, especially women and girls, is now more urgent than ever. International pressure must be designed to ensure the Taliban can no longer freely continue their oppressive actions.
