US President Joe Biden has received gifts worth thousands of dollars from Mohammad Ashraf Ghani and Abdullah Abdullah in the last year of the former Afghan government.
Russian President Vladimir Putin and former Afghan President Ashraf Ghani gave the “most expensive” gifts to President Joe Biden and his family in 2021, according to federal documents released Thursday.
The American CBS News news channel, quoting from the website details in the annual accounting of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding the gifts of American officials from world leaders, reported that Ashraf Ghani and his wife in June 2021 two pieces of expensive silk carpet with an estimated value of $28,800 to Joe Biden and the first lady of the United States gave gifts.
Also, in the same month of June/June 2021, Abdullah Abdullah, who was the head of the Supreme National Reconciliation Council, also gave Mr. Biden a brass and lapis lazuli jewelry box with an estimated value of $1,150.
On June 24, 2021, less than two months before the fall of the Afghan government at the hands of the Taliban, Ghani and Abdullah went to Washington to talk with Joe Biden and met Joe Biden at the White House.
All gifts from Putin and Ghani were reportedly transferred to the US National Archives, which is required for any gift to a US official worth more than $415.
In his meeting with Mr. Biden in Geneva, Switzerland on June 16, 2021, Russian President Vladimir Putin gave Mr. Biden a “miniature writing pen set” with an estimated value of $12,000.
