Suicide of an Afghan Migrant from Panjshir Province in Islamabad, Pakistan

Report by Ahmad Soheil Parto

**Consequences of Delays in Canadian and U.S. Immigration Applications**

In a shocking incident, an Afghan citizen from Panjshir province, who had been living in Pakistan for some time, took his own life last night by hanging himself in his guesthouse in the Peshawar More area of Islamabad. According to initial reports, the migrant, named Shir, was one of the applicants for Canada’s resettlement program, and his case was in its final stages. Local sources suggest that the likely reason for this tragic act was the prolonged delays in processing immigration applications to Canada and the United States, which have left many refugees in a state of uncertainty and despair in recent months.

The psychological pressure on Afghan refugees living in Pakistan has increased significantly, as they grapple with numerous economic, legal, and psychological challenges. On one hand, Pakistan’s strict policies against Afghan refugees and their mass deportations, and on the other hand, the lengthy resettlement processes in Western countries, have left many refugee families in inhumane conditions.

Delays in processing U.S. immigration applications are one of the biggest concerns for these refugees. Many of them, after years of waiting, are still unaware of their fate. The suspension and sluggishness of this process have not only affected the lives of thousands of refugees but have also led to serious mental health issues.

This incident serves as a warning to international organizations and human rights institutions, as well as to countries that have promised resettlement to migrants. Although the United States and Western countries have repeatedly emphasized their commitment to supporting Afghan refugees, in practice, the process of reviewing applications has been extremely slow and exhausting.

Analysts warn that if this situation continues, there is a risk of increased suicides and the emergence of more severe crises. International organizations and host countries must address this situation as soon as possible to prevent further humanitarian disasters.

**Call for Immediate Action**

Human rights activists and Afghan refugees in Pakistan have repeatedly called on international organizations, including the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the U.S. government, to expedite the processing of applications. They emphasize that any delay in this process directly endangers the lives of thousands of refugees and could lead to more humanitarian tragedies.

Afghan refugees in Pakistan are still waiting for a clear response from the relevant authorities. The recent action of this migrant highlights the depth of the crisis and the urgent need to address the problems faced by refugees—problems that, if ignored, will have irreversible consequences.
