On December 29, 2024 (9th of Day, 1403 in the Persian calendar), a Boeing 737-800 aircraft belonging to Jeju Air, flight number 7C2216, experienced an accident at Muan International Airport in South Korea.
The plane, which was flying from Bangkok, Thailand, to Muan, was carrying 181 people, including 175 passengers and 6 crew members.
According to reports, the aircraft veered off the runway during landing and collided with a concrete wall, resulting in a fire and severe destruction. Unfortunately, at least 124 people lost their lives in the incident, making it the deadliest aviation accident in South Korea since 1997.
Initial investigations suggest that a bird strike and adverse weather conditions may have been contributing factors to the accident. The airport’s control tower had issued a bird strike warning, and shortly afterward, the pilots declared an emergency. However, the exact cause of the incident is still under investigation.
Kim E-be, the CEO of Jeju Air, apologized for the tragedy, stating that the company would fully cooperate with the relevant authorities and prioritize support for the grieving families.
This disaster has deeply impacted South Korea’s aviation industry, prompting officials to conduct thorough reviews of flight safety measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
