The European Commission writes: “It must be clearly labeled that a food contains an insect (with Latin and German names) and also in what form (e.g. as a powder). Appropriate allergy information is also mandatory.
Possible reactions of the human body to the consumption of insects include:
– Allergy or anaphylactic reactions (to different parts of the insects or to the substrate that the insects are fed on; people who are already allergic to crustaceans, crustaceans, molluscs and house dust mites are particularly affected)
– Poisoning due to toxic materials such as chitin and tannins
– Diseases caused by dangerous parasites in the digestive system of the insects (especially if they were not subjected to a sufficiently long period of starvation before being killed and processed to allow the entire intestinal contents to be emptied)
– Metabolic problems due to phytates, oxalates, chelating agents and saponins
– Possible long-term consequences of frequent consumption of many other insects that are not yet approved as food: growth retardation, hypofertility, masculinization in women, edema, jaundice, liver cancer
